Reunion History

The Ybarra Family Reunion was started back in August of 1970.  It started as a birthday celebration for Mama Rosita.  This was the idea of Mary Ybarra Ochoa.  Mary thought it would be a great time and occasion for a "family reunion".  So, that is how it all started.

The first family reunion was held in Robert Lee, TX at the small recreation hall to the right of the swimming pool.  It is estimated that around 100 people attended the reunion.  The reunion was held in Robert Lee for about the following 5-6 years.  At that time, Virginia Lara came up with the idea that the reunion could be rotated between Abilene and Robert Lee.

Today the reunion is rotated  each year between 4 cities: Robert Lee, Abilene, San Angelo and Ozona.

The reunion is still held in honor of Mama Rosita, but it is also held in honor of her 9 children: Pete Ybarra+, Regina Jasso+, Sara Lara+, Eulalia Monjaras+, Cruz Gloria+, Isabel Ybarra+, Inez Ybarra, Santiago Ybarra, and Maria Pena.

Usually the family reunion is a 2-day (sat.-sun.) event.  Saturday consists of a big family meal, family pictures, and a dance.  On Sunday, the families gather to eat breakfast and play games.

Many times the family reunion has a theme.  Some past themes include: Hawaiian, Fall/Thanksgiving, 50's, Mexican, Prom, Movie Celebrity.

Trophies are given out at each family reunion.  The sub-family with the most members present receives a trophy.  This is the only trophy that is passed each year to the family that wins and the family's name is engraved on the trophy.  A trophy is given each year to the youngest family member present and to the family or family member who traveled the furthest.

The following are a list of games that have been played at family reunions:
Loteria
Softball tournament
Washers
Water balloon toss
